What is a bridal shower?
A bridal shower is similar to a hen party in that it’s a way for a bride-to-be to mark the end of their life as a singleton. However, bridal showers tend to be tamer, more sedate and, dare we say it, a tad classier than the average hen do. There doesn’t have to be a rudely shaped piece of chocolate or an indecent party game in sight. Plus you’ll be tucked up in bed at a sensible hour and wake up unscathed the next morning, minus the hangover from hell.
What’s more, you should find it easier to catch up with people at leisure and, certainly, enjoy a better quality of conversation than you would in a nightclub at 2am.
So if you really don’t fancy falling out of a taxi or belting out karaoke with a shoe missing, a bridal shower offers the ideal alternative. It’s still a way of bringing together the women in your life before you tie the knot, along with those close to your intended, such as their sister or mum. Indeed, it offers the perfect chance to meet and break the ice ahead of the big day. And while it’s essentially a female-focused occasion, there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t ask along a chap who means a lot to you – as long, of course, as he’s not the groom.
Another key difference between bridal showers and hen parties is the gifts. After all, the clue’s in the name. The idea of the bridal shower is that you ‘shower’ the soon-to-be married woman with presents – proper ones, without any lumps of cheeky chocolate anywhere! And because these events typically last just a few hours and are significantly cheaper than, say, a raucous weekend in Barcelona, it’s more affordable for guests to attend and, if they wish, show their affection and appreciation with a gift.
But having a bridal shower definitely isn’t the boring option. You’ll still enjoy plenty of laughs and fun, and could include a few cheeky-but-clean games. You can also choose a theme for your celebration, although that’s optional.
As with a hen bash, the maid of honour is typically responsible for organising the bridal shower. So she’ll be the one sending out invites and coordinating responses, sorting out the date, location and itinerary and making the booking, while organising any music and games, plus the theme if you’re having one.
However, while that sounds a lot, admin really is minimal, especially once the date, time and venue are sorted – and it’s certainly much easier than planning a weekend away.
